BREATHING SPACE IS THE FIRST SHOW OF A TRILOGY

to continue with Inhale in 2007 and Exhale in 2008.

The exhibition is a collection of individual installations using sculpted female portraits. Cast in tinted translucent resin the sculptures seem to float above bases integral to the works.

Sound tracks composed and realised in collaboration with the artist add a strong impression of breathing, evoking this invisible life force as we share the same breathing spaces with the sculptures.

Diamantopoulos speaks of a powerful release of invigorating energy in the perception and realisation of the work. The portraits, cast from moulds

made from sculptures first carved in clay, retain the fresh and fascinating multifaceted nature of the subject's active personality expressed within the time frame of the pose. The resin process adds complexity to each hollow piece through the re fl ection and refraction of light.

The subjects seem to look through us, as we look through them, but from another

place. And although static, the sculptures appear prepared for something, to be constantly searching.

Nola Diamantopoulos is a Sydney-based artist who for many years has been one of Australia 's foremost mosaic artists.
