  LIGHT
12 April - 5 May 07

LIGHT has preoccupied artists throughout the history of art. Light in its natural or manufactured form is both medium and subject for seven local and international artists who use photography, print-media and sculpture to explore and harness this volatile medium.

LIGHT opens at Artereal 747 Darling Street Rozelle 6 - 8pm Thursday 12 April 2007 .

Exhibiting artists include Elisa Sighicelli, Christopher Bucklow and Aziz+Cucher whose works are in major international collections. Approaches to the subject and use of light vary.

Working from his London rooftop with a simple pin-hole camera, each cell of light CHRISTOPHER BUCKLOW captures is a photographic image of the Sun's disc.

The light of the natural world is shunned in New Zealand artist, BRYDEE ROOD 's sculpture (image attached). When lit by neon in acid hues, the glowing pools of light emitted from plastic pipes salvaged from an Auckland building site transforms them into an alien and ethereal constellation.

SHANE FITZGERALD 's dramatic works (image attached) are thick with atmosphere and energy. Intense colour saturations are drenched with the light, heat and humidity of the forces of nature. Yet his romantic light-scapes are ideas of landscapes and not actual panoramas. Using a 35mm camera he shoots into an installation of coloured lamps, humidified to produce mists and fogs.

These are fictive landscapes literally painted with light.

Artereal welcomes you to join the artists on opening night, Thursday 12 April at 6 - 8pm .
