Simone Douglas Sky of the Skies
(1 June – 8 July)

The exhibition, Sky of the Skies, (1 June – 8 July) features new and existing works by Sydney born and New York based artist, Simone Douglas. In this exhibition Douglas, further explores the relationship with landscape and in addition the horizon.

Trained at the College of Fine Arts, University of NSW and at Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney, Simone Douglas has been exhibiting since the late 1980's. Her photographs have been exhibited at and are held in the collection of The V&A Museum, London; The Art Gallery of NSW, Sydney; The National Gallery Of Victoria, Melbourne, and in addition they are in the collection of the Tate Modern, London,

and have also been exhibited at The Photographers Gallery, London; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney and The Australian Centre For Photography, Sydney, among others.

Douglas' work is increasingly concerned with the destabilising of form such that its resultant appearance is one of uncertainty. Wendy Cavenett, for black+white magazine (1998) noted that “by slurring colour and form, Douglas has evolved an approach that eliminates the certainty of conventional photographic depth and clarity: the subject seems familiar, yet ultimately remains unknown.”
The new works featuring in Sky of the Skies further explore the above themes and have been influenced by her Blind series (2000), which will also feature in this exhibition.

Artereal is located within a heritage fire station in Darling Street Rozelle and will continue to present an exciting program of contemporary and experimental exhibitions by both upcoming and established artists and curators, including substantial international content.
