The fingerprint is a physical marker of individual identity that is a relative constant in the course of one’s life. By comparison, a recorded ECG (electrocardiogram) cycle is a line representation of the condition of one’s pulsing being at a given moment in time.
Gary Deirmendjian has sought to transform ECG recordings into architectonic form, as though monuments to a passing moment. In doing so, he is alluding to the suggestion that life is precarious and uncertain, and resides entirely in the moment. Not beyond and not before.
The artist has taken a random cycle from a recent recording of his own heart function and created the present ECG forms, by devising a set of instructions for a computer controlled hot wire to cut through block polystyrene.
The method was also used for Deirmendjian’s monumental Arch de Triomphe Individuel, commissioned by the Sydney Olympic Park Authority and located at Homebush to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Sydney Olympics.
