James Birch Artist Biography
Artist
Born Toowoomba, Queensland. Lives and works in Sydney, Australia.
Born in Australia to parents from the United Kingdom, European and other histories have long held a fascination for James Birch. He mines second hand bookshops seeking the forgotten and discarded to transform into something extraordinary.
Made from the perverse couplings of images plucked from the pages of early arts and science publications, his small collages are reminiscent of characters from a macabre masque. His day job is in theatre and intentionally or not, these works can be seen as ‘theatrical’. The images he creates allude to the extreme and to the darker side of humanity.
James Birch has also developed a collaborative partnership with Sydney based artist Damian Dillon. This creative partnership developed from the artists inhabiting a shared studio space and these collaborative works are expressive of their complementary aesthetic and mutual mind space. James Birch and Damian Dillon have exhibited their collaborative works extensively and won the 2009 Blacktown Arts Prize together.
