Gary Deirmendjian Artist Biography
Sculptor and contemporary artist
Born Leninakan, Armenia, USSR - now Gyumri, Armenia. Lives and works in Sydney, Australia.
Gary Deirmendjian demonstrates an extensive national exhibition history and holds Master of Fine Arts from the National Art School in Sydney. His broad practice encompasses sculpture, photography, video and installation as well as site specific works. Whilst well accustomed and known for working in scale and in the out-of-doors, he is tireless in his search for effective means and possibilities in being suggestive. A recent survey exhibition of his works at the University of Western Sydney demonstrated this very notion, in that what binds his oeuvre is not necessarily rooted in stylistic unity, but in the unity of intent and sensibility (catalogue PDF).
As well as being an invited artist to many group and curated exhibitions, Gary’s work is featured regularly in national prizes in sculpture and other media. These include McClelland Sculpture Survey and Award, Sculpture by the Sea, Helen Lempriere National Sculpture Award, National Photographic Portrait Prize, UWS Sculpture Award, The Blake Prize and Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize. His works have attracted several awards.
Gary has also created many temporary, site specific and commissioned public artworks, including a recently completed project for Sydney Olympic Park to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the Sydney Olympics. His work is attracting international academic and institutional attention, and is held in both corporate and private collections.
