DISSOLVE

1 Februaury – 3 March 2012

Annamarie Dzendrowskyj seeks to explore and paint that ambiguous ‘grey area’ between presence and absence in the atmospheric and haunting landscapes exhibited in Dissolve. Her images evoke a kind of netherworld that conflates time, place vision, and memory.

Her paintings are an investigation into the indeterminate nature of ‘ways of seeing’ and ‘ways of being’. They could be metaphors for states of mind as much as they are specific sites. Her landscapes appear to simultaneously emerge and dissolve, but to still retain recognisable elements of imagery; whether in the dark and moody distances of the vista along the M25 on the way to Gatwick at break of day, or the stark whites of a five-day white out during a bleak Austrian February near Lake Constance.

The starting points for her paintings are digital images that have been shot through the window of a moving car or bus, often when misted with rain or condensation. She consciously distances and isolates herself through the device of the window glass or camera lens from physical immersion in a location. The images are translated into oil paintings, and explore the tension between figuration and abstraction and the way in which the viewer understands or perceives time and place. The portrayal of light and surface considerations are key to the sense of presence and absence in Annamarie Dzendrowskyj’s subtle but complex works.

Born in London, Annamarie Dzendrowskyj trained as a classical ballet dancer before completing a degree in Philosophy and later studying Fine Arts at the National Art School in Sydney. This is her first solo exhibition with Artereal Gallery.
