LIFE TURNING

Nigel Harrison’s focus is not the surface appearance and anatomy of the male and female body that has been rendered by sculptors for centuries. He seeks to reveal what is hidden. To interpret the abstract poetry secreted inside the body that is nature’s sublime integration of form and mechanics. The sleek conduits, vessels and concealed beauty and rhythms of the human form are implicit in the expressive floor, wall and table pieces exhibited in ‘Fluid’ at Artereal Gallery in Rozelle 4-28 November 2009.

Working with wood, steel and plexiglass, he pushes the fundamentals of sculpture to trap three-dimensional qualities and fluidity in these inherently rigid materials and flat surfaces.

Nigel Harrison’s research for these works during the past two years has included sitting in on hospital surgical procedures and exploring the works and theories of French sculptors and philosophers while artist in residence in Paris at the International Cite des Artes.
