Nigel Harrison is head of Sculpture at the National Art School in Sydney . That visceral, muscular machine, the heart, with its emotional and spiritual as well as physiological significance is the focus of this exhibition. The poetic and intangible aspects of the heart are evoked in conjunction with the power and fragility of this complex organ.

Nigel works 'alla prima', like a painter who works straight on to the canvas, with little or no preliminary drawing. The works evolve and grow organically. The immediacy of this evolutionary way of working is evident in the tension and energy in these potent pieces.

Combining skills in carving, modelling, painting, casting and ceramics, Nigel's works go beyond the sterile formalism of he steel brigade of sculptors. His techniques and finesse with materials and practice are impeccable and exquisitely honed. He works in both monumental and small scale.

Nigel Harrison has exhibited extensively over a period of twenty-five years and his works are significant Australian and international collections.

LIFE TURNING continues until 23 February 2008 and the opening is 6-8pm Thursday 31 st January 2008 .
