Drew Bickford’s preoccupation is with manifestations of monstrosity and mutation, both physical and moral.
Homeosis, the title of this series of drawings, is defined as the transformation of one body part into another. It arises from random alterations of specific genes that are developmentally critical. The term comes from a science based publication on genetic mutation that looks at how human deformity and mutation have filtered into ancient mythology and into more recent aspects of popular culture.
The visceral detail and sometime saturnalia of Drew’s imaginings are released from the frenzy of lines only on closer and prolonged intimate examination and engagement with his images. In his works ‘the devil’ is truly in the detail.
